RACE ACTION HIGHLIGHTS 2007-2008 SEASON
It was a new and exciting brand of track
action that highlighted the 2007-2008
season at Lismore Speedway.
This past season represented a change of
administrative direction at the venue
after long-time promoter David Lander
took over the reins. From day one he
brought a fresh new approach to the
speedway shows, highlighted with some of
the biggest crowds ever seen in the 40
years oval track racing has been
conducted at the historical Showground
venue.
“The most important factor I have
attempted to bring to Lismore in
presenting speedway is entertainment.
Speedway is not only just a sport it is
also entertainment and my objective has
always been to give the patrons not only
a good show, but value for money and
with enough entertainment that leaves
them wanting more and counting down the
days to the next fixture,” David
Lander said.
A number of “firsts” were achieved
this season – the most significant
being the time-honoured running of the
New South Wales Speedcar Championship
and the inaugural Sprintcar Gold Cup.
Both these events attracted a capacity
crowd and showed that if the product is
right, the fans will come.
Sydney's Nathan Smee won a rough and
tumble state midget title, while the
inaugural Sprintcar Gold Cup was taken
out by Sydney star Ian Loudoun.
Another event that is destined to become
a regular attraction on the seasonal
calendar is the running of the East
Coast Winternationals – a Super Sedan
event (June 7 & 8, 2008) held in the
memory of Lismore's late, great multi
national titleholder Grenville Anderson.
The two categories that were the
mainstay of programming during the
2007-2008 season were the V8 Dirt
Modifieds and Super Sedans.
Andrew Pezzutti was the winner of the
annual Mr Modified title race, while
another highlight was the running of the
V8 Dirt Modified Summer Slam Series
grand final. Even though Luke Oldfield
took out the 30-lap final, the national
tournament was won by Victoria's Tim
Morse who was given the opportunity to
say goodbye to the Lismore fans on this
very memorable night during Easter,
2008.
One of the biggest events of the season
was the running of the Australian
Formula 500 Championship that attracted
drivers from all major states.
The event was won by Queensland's
Michael Pronger from Garry Hart (Qld)
and West Aussie Alex McLaughlin in a
superb two nights of Formula 500 action.
AUSTRALIAN VINTAGE SPEEDWAY FESTIVAL –
March 20, 21 and 22, 2009
David Lander is already well into
planning the 2008-2009 season.
For long time followers of the sport one
of the highlights will be the inaugural
Australian Vintage Speedway Festival,
that will be held on March 20, Saturday,
March 21 and Sunday, March 22, 20009.
The event, that will represent the
ultimate trip down memory lane, will
commence on Friday evening with a
welcoming party before two full days of
static display and demonstration runs.
The ultimate objective is to conduct an
“all Offenhauser” speedcar
demonstration event.
This is the first time anything of this
magnitude has been attempted and that
alone should be worth travelling a long
way to see.
AUSTRALIAN SUPER SEDAN CHAMPIONSHIP
The big event of the 2008-2009 season
will be the running of the Australian
Super Sedan Championship.
This is one of the genuine blue ribbon
races of the Australian speedway season
and its allocation is keenly contested
by promoters from the respective state
in line to host the title.
A final schedule of events – and dates
involving activities in the Lismore
township leading up to the weekend of
two-day race action – are yet to be
finalised.
The national Super Sedan title will have
all the gloss and glitter that David
Lander is noted for when promoting a
major event. More news on the running of
the 2009 Australian Super Sedan
Championship will be released as details
come to hand.
Congratulations
to the medal winners!!!!
