The traditional season opening V8 Dirt Modified headline main event at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway has undergone a name change.
When promoter David Lander took over the lease at the historic Lismore Showground prior to the start of the 2007-2008 season, he introduced a major V8 Dirt Modified race for the start of the six month racing term.
It was planned as an annual event and was labelled the V8 Dirt Modified Lord Mayor's Cup.
But with time comes change and from now on, the Cup has now become the gold cup – the V8 Dirt Modified Lismore City Gold Cup that is – as a new era of the great race begins.
“It was time for a name change, as simply as that,” David said.
“Everyone is well aware we run a big race for the V8 Dirt Modifieds at the first meeting of each season, so all we're really doing is upgrading the branding. Everything will remain the same and hopefully with a new event title, the status of the race will be increased with a new promotional theme that will go along with pre-meeting publicity."
With David's control at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway, he is the longest serving promoter at the speedway venue and he is always looking at ways to continually work his major events for maximum exposure.
In a further revamp to his programming, another annual event – the December 4 Kids' Christmas party – also has had a spruce up.
In addition to the usual night of family entertainment featuring the open invitation wheelie-bin race over a one lap distance, push bike races for kids of all ages, and give-aways, there also will be a full speedway programme, as per each season's scheduling.
The 2021-22 season will feature the running of a 50-lap main event for the Wingless Sprintcar division. It's anticipated the entry numbers will be good with the long distance race added to the card.
“As much as it's a night of good fun in the early season Christmas spirit, it's also a proper speedway programme featuring many of our regular divisions.
“The Wingless division will now be the major attraction with a 50 lapper. There will also be our support categories in what promises to be one of the best nights of the season,” David added.
